Kendray Initiative
The Kendray Initiative was established in 1999, when residents asked the Council for help with the problems which Kendray was facing. Residents began working with the Council and other organisations who could help to put together a plan of action to address these problems.
This hard work was recognised by the government in 2002, when Kendray was given funding to try out a new approach to redevelopment work – this is called Neighbourhood Management.
This funding provided a team (called the Neighbourhood Management Team) to support the work of the Kendray Initiative, to allow it to do more long term work. Click on the words 'Neighbourhood Management Team' in the previous sentence to meet the team but only until 31st March 2009, they have now moved onto pastures new and left sole control to the Kendray Initiative Board to carry on the legacy
Up to date the Initiative has developed the following :
* Put together a plan for housing and estate redevelopment (called The Blueprint) in full consultation with residents on the estate
* Worked to bring a housing association and a private housing company onto the estate to build new homes to buy and bungalows on some of the demolition areas
* Brought in Individual Opportunity Advisers to support local people who need help to go back to work
* Organised sports and holiday activities for over 1000 Kendray kids
* Introduced programmes to help local kids to do better at school & improve their behaviour
* A special project to support kids who may be in danger of getting into trouble
* Worked on the home security and policing which has helped to bring crime down on the estate by 21% and reduced burglary by 39% in a single year
* Organised 4 Kendray Cleanup and Spring clean days;including the highly popular Bring Out your Rubbish days
* Organised courses on the estate which local people have asked for
* Worked with local young people to design facilities for them on the central 'blobs'
* Helped Oaks Millenium Technology Initiative on Farm Road to extend their opening hours and offer a wider range of courses
* Helped the Good Neighbours Group to set up the Kendray Kids Club & the Young at Heart group
The Kendray Initiative is skill alive & Kicking so if your interested in expressing your views why not call into the Community House & ask for more information on how to get involved.
